Population: Adults ages 18+ with mental illness and/or substance abuse diagnosis in both inpatient and outpatient setting.

Interventions utilized: animal assisted therapy, therapeutic art, therapeutic music, dance/movement, yoga, leisure education, social skills development, sober lifestyle, emotional awareness.

Dates available: Accepting interns year round - must apply 3 months prior to desired start date.

Physical Medicine/ Rehab

Schwab is a 104 bed inpatient and outpatient rehab hospital. The recreation therapy department provides services for individuals with strokes, TBI, SCI, pediatrics and general rehab injuries. Recreation therapy also co-treats with PT/OT/Speech daily.

The Recreation Therapy Service Line’s mission is to provide comprehensive rehabilitative care to veterans in need of rehabilitation to attain their full physical, psychosocial, educational, and vocational potential and return to community living. Rehabilitation is provided by an interdisciplinary team that applies state-of-the-art clinical skills, equipment and techniques. Recreation Therapy Service will utilize hospital, community, state, and federal resources effectively and optimize patient outcomes thus achieving high patient satisfaction.
