Recreation Therapy Openings
The State of Missouri, Department of Mental Health, Fulton (MO) State Hospital, is seeking full time Recreation Therapists to work in the different units. Our current openings are in our Sex Offender Rehabilitation Program (SORTS) Program and our Maximum Security Facility (Biggs). Fulton is located 90 miles west of St. Louis and 25 miles from Columbia, MO. The hospital is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and has been accredited by The Joint Commissions (TJC) since 1984. Fulton State Hospital is a Trauma Informed Care Organization.
Our 400-bed facility has more than 15 RT’s on campus, so the ability to share resources is excellent. The Rehab Services Department has more than 50 staff, which includes Recreation, Music, Occupational Therapists as well as Vocational Training and Library Services.
For any position:
- A degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a closely related field is required.
- CTRS welcomed, but not required.
- A commitment of the belief that all persons can change and that individuals traumatic experiences affect their path to recovery.

- Salary range $32,148 - $40,000 (SORTS and Biggs employees get an additional differential). This is dependent upon level of education and experience. For those with no experience, there is a raise to a RT2 level after 2 years. Starting salary for a RT2 is $35,640 (SORTS and Biggs employees get an additional differential). 6 month probationary raise given.

Fulton (MO) State Hospital -- SORTS Unit
We are looking for an energetic Recreational Therapist I-II that is interested in working on the Sex Offender Treatment Services Program (SORTS) at Fulton State Hospital. The program is located in a high security unit and will serve approximately 100 individuals. This is a civil involuntary commitment program for the treatment of individuals previously convicted of multiple sexually related crimes without successful treatment.
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist plays a vital role as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team working with clients who have serious histories of sexual offending, trauma histories of their own and corresponding mental illnesses that increase the likelihood of reoffending. Treatment is focused on learning self-regulation and self-management within a respectful, recovery based treatment program. Responsibilities include planning and conducting a variety of TR services and coordination and implementation of leisure opportunities.

We are looking for an energetic Recreational Therapist I-II that is interested in working in the Biggs Unit with all four programs. Biggs is the high security unit and will serve approximately 200 individuals. The leisure program offers a variety of services to all clients in the unit.
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist plays a vital role as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team working with clients who have severe and persistent mental illnesses as well as trauma histories of their own. The leisure program offers a variety of events, all that include planning and conducting a variety of TR services and coordination and implementation of leisure opportunities.
